Caving – West Mine 2025

Information

We have secured a rare opportunity only offered to Scouts groups to enter tunnels under Alderley Edge.

“Enter this Victorian Copper mine of the late 1850s via the old adit entrance. Cross the bridge of death to sand chamber. Learn about how the Victorian miners toiled to remove all the minerals and cut through the rock. Explore the depths of the many passageways and enjoy crawls and scrambles through this historic sandstone site of special scientific interest.”

What To Wear

Old clothes which can get dirty (no jeans). Sturdy footwear – hiking boots/shoes, wellys are best. Be prepared to get wet and sandy as we will attempt a few crawls. You may wish to bring a change of clothing – we also recommend a bin bag to sit on for your journey home.

The mines are a comfortable temperature all year round. However the car park and walk to the mines can be cold, especially in winter, so consider bringing a coat – it can be left in a safe location just inside the mines entrance. If you are not appropriately dressed you may not be able to attend the trip.
